UConn's School of Engineering is HiringHow does the School of Engineering at UConn have a positive impact on Storrs Mansfield CT real estate as well as other Greater Hartford towns?  The answer is easy:  The School of Engineering is hiring new faculty members!   So…what  does this mean whan we look at the reports about  the real estate market – does it impact the news we see everyday?

Just this morning one of our clients emailed me and said “I can’t take it anymore. We’re in a recession, we’re heading out of a recession, it will get worse, it’s getting better…it’s driving me crazy. I don’t know what to do anymore!”

CT Real Estate Market…Good…Bad…Both?

I agree with her - we are getting bits of good news, but it always seems to be countered by some bad news. It is really hard to know what to do and how to plan if you are thinking of buying or selling real estate in this market. Waiting could be good….or it could be bad.  Some days I feel like a yo-yo!

So, what we like to do is  look at and be thoughtful about what is going on in our lives and our area. Make sense?  I mean, in all honestly, I really don’t know very many people who have lost their jobs – friends and clients who live and work  in the towns surrounding Storrs Mansfield CT are really pretty stable in terms of jobs and incomes.  The largest employer in the area, The University of CT, has many faculty and staff earning great  incomes and it does not look like those positions are going anywhere any time soon.

Many positions at UConn are very well-funded by both the private and public sector and  research can bring in even more money (and prestige) to the University of CT so it would not make sense to just completely stop hiring (even though there is “hiring freeze” on, positions that fit the right criteria are still being filled).  We know UConn is hiring because we  help many of the new faculty members moving to the area.  We want them understand the local/regional housing market and make great decisions when buying a home and have many long-standing friendships as a result of helping so many great people during the real estate process.

Alternative EnergyGreen is Good for Storrs CT Real Estate

So…why is The School of Engineering at UConn hiring? One reason is that with alternative energy and technology an area of great concern and a high priority in the country, The School of Engineering at UConn has been putting together an integrated team to work in the area of  fuel cells and other alternative energy applications.  New faculty are being  or have been hired and will be moving to the Storrs Mansfield CT area, as well as some of the surrounding towns in the coming months.

Everyone knows about the terrible 1930′s depression right?   Many areas of the country were devastated due to the loss of jobs. Looking back at the history of the Storrs Mansfield CT area,  because of the steady employment in the area and  The University of Connecticut, many people were working, getting paid well and building, buying and selling homes!

Mansfield CT: Local  vs. National

The Mansfield Historical Society is a great resource and I recently read a  ”Story of Joe Toth.”  His son recalls the days of the depression but says that they “had it good” because his father worked at UConn as a carpenter, had a good income and even built a house – in 1932!

So, we all need to look at what is occuring regionally when making decisions in regards to buying or selling a home, be sure to look at  what is REALLY happening in your local region.   I say, “Way to Go!” School of Engineering at UConn!  Keep hiring!!  and while your at it, please find some really cheap ways to heat my house and fuel my car – thank you!
